File Formats
There is a wide range of opportunities when it comes to the presentation of a text. The main distinction in file formats can be made between direct and non-direct text editing. Provided the translation of a text has to be made in writing, the translator needs a text which can be processed directly by keyboard or mouse, thus a directly editable text which can be overwritten.
Therefore, a directly editable file format is best applicable for a written translation. The most commonly used formats for this purpose is provided by office software for text processing, such as MS Word and OpenOffice, as well as the rather uncommon software LyX with the following file extensions:
.doc, .docx, .lyx, .odt, .rtf, .txt
Furthermore, there are special programs for text processing, such as FrameMaker, InDesign, PageMaker, MS PowerPoint and QuarkXPress, which are, however, rather applied in the production of prepress documents. File formats of these programs are also directly editable and have the below-mentioned file suffixes:
.edd, .indt, p65, .pmd, .ppt, .pptx, .qxd
Programs that are mainly designed for the compilation of word lists or of text blocks have an exceptional position. These programs, like MS Excel and OpenOffice Calculator save editable files with the extensions:
.ods, .xls, .xml
Translation of the text content of websites requires special software, the so called html-editor. The most commonly used editor is Phase 5. This enables the display of the text in the source format, thus in the website´s script or also in the translated layout. The typical file extensions of these web editors are:
.hmtl, .htmls
Finally, there are the non-directly editable file formats. These have to be converted into an editable format before the translation process can be started. This requires a so called OCR-software, such as Abbyy Finereader, PDF-Grabber or OmniPage. The conversion may involve changes in the original text format and an incorrect output of the text. This occurs most often in images and charts which are displayed at the wrong position or in a distorted manner. Such kinds of files have the extensions as follows:
.pdf, .jpg, .bmp, .gif, .psd, .png, .tif, .cdr, .cmx, .eps
