The following glossary provides an overview of important terms used in the sector of translations.

Alphabet
Describes an amount of graphic characters (referred to as letters), which are used to specify the particular phonemes of a language and provide for their characterization in writing.
Character font
Refers to the typography and is used to specify the graphic representation of a character set, e.g.: Arial, Times New Roman, Courier New.
Compatibility
In general, updated versions of a program are used to be downward compatible to previous versions. Previous versions are, however, not upward compatible, since they lack some functions.
Copyright
The individual and absolute right on the protection of the intellectual property in non-material and material terms
Dictionary
Is a reference book containing an index of words of a language in alphabetical order and the assignment of linguistic equivalents of another language to each entry.
E-Mail attachment
File which is being electronically enclosed as attachment to an E-Mail to be transmitted by means of a mail-server.
File conversion
Describes the transformation of data included in a data format to another one, e.g.: from a PDF-format to the DOC-format.
File format
Describes an abbreviation most often consisting of three letters at the end of the file name, e.g.: .doc, .txt, and requires specific programs to be opened.
Font size
Refers to the typography and specifies the measurement of the size used with a font and is defined by way of a point-system.
Foreign language
Is a language not spoken in the native country of the person referred to
General terms and conditions
General terms and conditions (abbr. GTC) are pre-specified contract terms stipulated by a contract party towards the other contract party, when it comes to the conclusion of a contract.
Glossary
Refers to a list of words including their descriptions or, as the case may be, their translations.
Grammar
Related to linguistics and linguistic research and refers to each kind of a systematic language description
Hyperlink
Means a linking within a text document used to refer to other passages in the text, e.g.: contents, glossary
Language
Describes specific character systems (e.g. the English language) for the appropriate rendition of written words.
Letters
Describes graphic characters which are generally applied in a human, alphabetically written language. The letters of a written language as a whole give an alphabet at which the phonemes are depicted by way of characters.
Local language
Refers to the language spoken in a country.
Native language
Is the language that a person has spoken from earliest childhood
Orthography
Describes the common spelling of words in a language subject to the used writing.
Source language
Refers to the original language of a present text to be translated into a target language.
Special language
Is used in a subject field and characterised by the use of specific linguistic means of expression
Spelling errors
A variant spelling of the orthography is generally referred to as a spelling error.
Standard line
One standard line consists of 50-55 characters incl. blanks.
Target language
Specifies the language of the text for its translation from the source language.
Terminology
Is the total of all terms including technical terms of a special language
Text amount
Defines the amount of characters incl. blanks of a text as a whole or as a part of it.
Text conversion
Describes the transformation of data contained in a file format into another one, e.g.: from the DOC-format into the RTF-format.
Text formatting
Related to the text processing and used to specify the graphic layout and arrangement of individual text elements
Text module
Consists of one or more sentences that are used recurrently and frequently occur in technical documentations
Text passage
Refers to the text design and describes a passage consisting of one or several sentences within a consecutive text.
Text recognition program
Describes the optical character recognition (Abbr. OCR), thus the automatic text recognition rendered in pictorial form.
Text transmission
Another term for the translation of a text from one language into another one.
Translating
The result that is rendered by the written and intellectual performance when a translation is being made.
Translation
Written transmission of one language into another one using vocabulary and technical terms in due consideration of orthography- and grammar rules.
Translator
Person who has a degree in foreign languages and translates texts from one language into another one.
Website content
Text which is stored in HTML-files or content management systems and can be accessed online using the internet.
